Overview

Scutellaria barbata is a perennial herb native to Korea and southern China, widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the treatment of bacterial infections, hepatitis, tumors (especially various cancers), and as a diuretic. Its pharmacological activities are attributed mainly to its rich content of flavonoids (such as scutellarin, apigenin-5-O-β-glucopyranoside, apigenin, luteolin), diterpenoids (including neo-clerodane diterpenoids), polysaccharides, volatile oils and steroids. Preclinical studies demonstrate antibacterial, antioxidant, antimutagenic and anticancer properties; it can inhibit cancer cell growth via multiple mechanisms including suppression of angiogenesis through VEGF regulation and MMP2/9 inhibition; induction of apoptosis via mitochondrial pathways; modulation of immune function by regulating cytokines such as IL-2 and IFN-gamma; attenuation of NF-kB-mediated inflammation; free radical scavenging activity; and synergistic effects with chemotherapeutics like cisplatin. Early phase clinical trials suggest potential benefit in advanced breast cancer patients with favorable safety profiles. It is most commonly administered orally or topically in TCM practice[1][2][3][5][6].
