Scutellariae radix, known as Huang Qin (黄芩) in Chinese, is the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. It is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb with a long history of use for clearing heat, drying dampness, purging fire, removing toxins, and preventing miscarriage. The main bioactive constituents are flavonoids—primarily baicalein, wogonin, oroxylin A (aglycones), and their glycosides (baicalin, wogonoside, oroxylin A-7-glucuronide). These compounds exhibit anti-inflammatory, antipyretic (fever-reducing), anticancer and antiviral activities. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is used to treat conditions such as fever, dysentery, jaundice, coughs due to lung heat or infection; it also has applications in hypertension and skin infections.
