Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Scytera is a branded 2% coal tar aerosol foam formulation used topically for the symptomatic treatment of chronic plaque psoriasis, particularly on hair-bearing or difficult-to-treat skin areas. It contains 10% coal tar topical solution (Liquor Carbonis Detergens) equivalent to 2% coal tar in an emollient foam vehicle, allowing easy spreading, rapid drying, and reduced coal tar odor compared with traditional tar preparations.[7][12] Coal tar exerts antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and keratolytic effects on the epidermis, reducing scaling, erythema, and pruritus; mechanistically it slows epidermal cell proliferation, promotes desquamation of hyperkeratotic plaques, and decreases bacterial growth in psoriatic lesions.[1][7] The product was developed using Foamix foam technology and licensed to Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, and is marketed in the United States by Promius Pharma as an FDA-approved topical coal tar medication for psoriasis.[2][4][8][12]
