SDF-1(S4V) is an engineered, protease-resistant variant of the chemokine stromal cell-derived factor-1 alpha (SDF-1α), also known as CXCL12. It is designed to resist cleavage by proteases such as dipeptidylpeptidase-4 (DPP-4)/CD26 and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), which are often upregulated in injured tissues and can inactivate native SDF-1α. This enhanced stability allows for sustained biological activity. SDF-1(S4V) functions as an agonist of the CXCR4 receptor, attracting stem and progenitor cells and promoting processes like angiogenesis and neovascularization. It has been investigated for its potential in cardioprotection following myocardial infarction and for improving blood flow in peripheral artery disease.
