Overview

SDF-1 alpha, also known as C-X-C motif chemokine 12 (CXCL12), is a small (8 kDa), 68-89 amino acid peptide belonging to the CXC chemokine family. It is ubiquitously expressed and plays crucial roles in various biological processes including cell growth, migration, proliferation, differentiation, and survival. It primarily signals through the G-protein coupled receptor CXCR4, and also through CXCR7, to mediate cell chemotaxis, tissue repair, angiogenesis, and inflammatory responses. SDF-1 alpha is involved in the homing of hematopoietic stem cells, T cells, monocytes, and endothelial progenitor cells, and is being investigated for therapeutic applications in conditions such as ischemic cardiomyopathy, peripheral artery disease, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
