Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**SDF Alpha** is a plasma-derived alpha-1 protease inhibitor (alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor, A1-PI) developed by Abeona Therapeutics using their proprietary SDF™ (Salt Diafiltration) ethanol-free process for purification from human plasma. It functions as a serine protease inhibitor (serpin) that primarily inhibits neutrophil elastase in the lungs, protecting lung tissue from proteolytic damage in alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD). Developed for the treatment of inherited chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) associated with congenital A1-PI deficiency, it aims to provide augmentation therapy to maintain protective serum levels of A1-PI, similar to approved products but with an improved manufacturing process to enhance purity and yield.
