Overview

Sea buckthorn (*Hippophae rhamnoides* L.) is a botanical extract derived from the berries of the sea buckthorn plant, which is native to Europe and Asia. It is characterized by a high concentration of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids (such as quercetin and kaempferol), carotenoids, phytosterols, and various vitamins. Clinical research has demonstrated that sea buckthorn puree can significantly decrease and delay the postprandial insulin response and improve the glycaemic profile in overweight or obese individuals and those with prediabetes. These effects are thought to be mediated by the inhibition of carbohydrate-digesting enzymes like alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase, as well as the presence of fibers and polyphenols that may delay gastric emptying or glucose absorption. It is also being investigated for its potential to manage hypercholesterolemia.
