Overview

Sea buckthorn extract is derived from the plant Hippophae rhamnoides and consists of bioactive compounds including polyphenolic flavonoids (e.g., isorhamnetin, quercetin, kaempferol), tannins, proanthocyanidins, and triterpenes. It has numerous pharmacological effects documented in vitro, in vivo, and, to a limited extent, in clinical trials, including **antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, antihypertensive, hypolipidemic, antineoplastic, and dermatological activities**. Mechanisms of action are diverse and attributed to multi-component and multi-target effects, such as inhibition of inflammatory signaling pathways (e.g., TNF-alpha, NOD-like receptor), enhancement of antioxidant enzyme activity (SOD, GSH-Px), modulation of lipid and glucose metabolism, inhibition of platelet aggregation, and modulation of gut microbiota. Its primary indications explored in clinical studies are metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular risk factor modulation (lipids, blood pressure), hepatic disorders, and dermatological support.
