Overview

Sea buckthorn oil is a plant oil derived from the seeds or fruit pulp of the sea buckthorn shrub (Hippophae rhamnoides). It is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, notably omega-3, omega-6, omega-7 (palmitoleic acid), and omega-9, as well as antioxidants such as tocopherols (vitamin E), carotenoids (provitamin A), and phytosterols. Sea buckthorn oil is used primarily as a dietary supplement and in topical preparations for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and potential regenerative properties. Its proposed mechanisms include improving skin hydration and barrier function, enhancing tissue repair (notably in burns), reducing inflammation, and potentially supporting cardiovascular and liver health. It has traditional uses in the management of skin conditions, burns, dry eyes, menopausal symptoms (vaginal atrophy), and gastrointestinal health. It is not classified as a pharmaceutical drug or approved as a medicine for specific diseases by major regulatory authorities[1][3][4][5][6][7][9].
