Overview

Sea buckthorn polysaccharide (SBP) is a bioactive carbohydrate complex extracted from the berries of the sea buckthorn plant (*Hippophae rhamnoides*). It is primarily composed of starch, cellulose, hemicelluloses, and pectin. SBP functions as a prebiotic and immunomodulator, demonstrating significant potential in the management of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis. Its primary mechanism of action involves the modulation of the gut microbiota, specifically increasing the abundance of beneficial, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria like *Bifidobacterium* and *Bacteroides*. This shift in microbial composition leads to elevated levels of SCFAs (acetate, propionate, butyrate, etc.), which activate FFAR2 and FFAR3 receptors to maintain intestinal barrier integrity and suppress pro-inflammatory signaling pathways, including TLR-4 and the NLRP3 inflammasome. Additionally, SBP exhibits potent antioxidant properties by enhancing the activity of enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), thereby reducing oxidative stress-induced tissue damage.
