Overview
Sea cucumber extract is a marine-derived natural product being investigated for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Derived from holothurians (sea cucumbers), it is rich in bioactive compounds such as chondroitin sulfate, mucopolysaccharides, and other glycosaminoglycans. These components are reported to possess anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive properties, which may help alleviate joint pain and improve physical function in patients with degenerative joint disease. Faulding Healthcare Pty Ltd has evaluated the extract in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, both as a monotherapy and in combination with Boswellia serrata extract. As a nutraceutical or natural health product, it aims to provide structural support to cartilage and modulate inflammatory pathways associated with joint degradation.
