Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sea grapes extract is a botanical dietary supplement derived from the marine macroalga Caulerpa lentillifera (commonly known as "sea grapes" or "green caviar"). The extract contains a variety of bioactive compounds including polysaccharides (notably galactose-, mannose-, xylose-, and glucose-rich), carotenoids such as beta-carotene, phenols, alginates, minerals (calcium and iron), protein, and dietary fiber[6][8][7]. It also contains caulerpin—an alkaloid with antioxidant properties[1]. Sea grapes extract has demonstrated antioxidant activity in vitro and in animal studies. Preclinical research suggests it may improve blood glucose levels and cholesterol profiles in high-fat diet models[1][5], reduce body weight gain in obese mice via its beta-carotene content[4], exhibit hepatoprotective effects in diabetic mice[1], and inhibit allergic responses by suppressing β-hexosaminidase release from mast cells[3]. Human clinical trials have shown that oral supplementation is well tolerated at doses up to 0.5 g/day with no significant adverse events reported; it is marketed primarily as a functional food or nutraceutical ingredient for metabolic health support (e.g., obesity management)[2][4].
