Overview

The seasonal influenza hemagglutinin (HA) vaccine, developed and manufactured by Daiichi Sankyo, is an inactivated, quadrivalent split-virion vaccine indicated for the prevention of influenza. It is formulated annually to match the viral strains recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. The vaccine contains purified hemagglutinin antigens from two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). Its mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce HA-specific neutralizing antibodies. These antibodies bind to the viral hemagglutinin protein, preventing the virus from attaching to sialic acid receptors on host respiratory epithelial cells, thereby neutralizing the virus and preventing infection. In the Japanese market, it is typically administered via subcutaneous or intramuscular injection.
