Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The seasonal influenza quadrivalent vaccine (specifically referring to VN-0104/FluMist Quadrivalent) is a live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) developed by AstraZeneca and licensed to Daiichi Sankyo for the Japanese market. Administered as an intranasal spray, it contains four cold-adapted, temperature-sensitive influenza virus strains (two Type A and two Type B). Unlike inactivated vaccines, LAIV replicates locally in the nasopharynx, stimulating mucosal IgA production and T-cell mediated immunity in addition to systemic IgG responses, thereby mimicking natural infection. The vaccine was approved in Japan in March 2023 for use in children and adolescents aged 2 to 18 years. Clinical development is also ongoing for healthy adult populations in Japan.
