Overview

Seasonal influenza vaccine + pandemic influenza vaccine refers to the co-administration or combined use of standard seasonal flu vaccines, which are reformulated annually to match circulating influenza A and B strains, with pandemic influenza vaccines that are specifically developed against a novel or highly virulent influenza subtype (such as H5N1) with pandemic potential. Seasonal vaccines are typically inactivated, recombinant, or live-attenuated influenza virus preparations that induce strain-specific humoral and cellular immune responses, while pandemic influenza vaccines are often monovalent, sometimes adjuvanted formulations targeted to a single emergent strain and may be stockpiled or rapidly produced in response to a pandemic threat. Together, they are used for prophylaxis of influenza during seasons when there is simultaneous concern about both routine seasonal flu and a specific pandemic-capable strain, leveraging antigen exposure to induce neutralizing antibodies against the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase proteins of both seasonal and pandemic influenza viruses.
