Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The combination of seasonal influenza vaccine and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) is a prophylactic immunization strategy used to prevent respiratory infections in high-risk populations, particularly the elderly and those with chronic conditions. The seasonal influenza vaccine is typically a quadrivalent inactivated vaccine (QIV) containing antigens from two Influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two Influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). The pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, most commonly the 23-valent version (PPSV23), contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 23 serotypes of *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. While these vaccines are frequently co-administered in separate syringes at different anatomical sites to improve vaccination rates, they are not currently available as a single fixed-dose combination product in most major markets. Historically, products like Sanofi's Pneumo-Flu were developed to combine these components, but clinical practice has shifted toward co-administration of the latest seasonal flu formulations alongside the 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine. The primary goal of this combination is to reduce the incidence of pneumonia, hospitalization, and mortality associated with these two major respiratory pathogens.
