Overview

A seasonal split influenza vaccine is a type of inactivated influenza vaccine produced by disrupting (splitting) the influenza virus particles with detergents or solvents. This process reduces the reactogenicity of the vaccine compared to whole-virus vaccines while maintaining immunogenicity by presenting the surface antigens, primarily hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). These vaccines are typically trivalent or quadrivalent, containing strains of Influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2) and Influenza B (Victoria and/or Yamagata lineages) as recommended annually by the World Health Organization (WHO). They are widely used for the prevention of seasonal influenza in various age groups and are updated each year to match circulating viral strains.
