The seasonal trivalent influenza vaccine (2010-2011 formulation) is an inactivated viral vaccine designed to provide protection against three specific strains of influenza: A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like, A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like, and B/Brisbane/60/2008-like viruses. This formulation was notable for being the first seasonal vaccine to incorporate the pandemic H1N1 strain. In clinical trials sponsored by Alachua Government Services, Inc., this licensed vaccine was evaluated for safety and immunogenicity in pediatric populations (aged 6 months to 17 years), often administered as a booster dose following priming with a pandemic H1N1 vaccine such as Celvapan. The vaccine works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin (HA) protein. Hemagglutinin is a surface glycoprotein that mediates viral attachment to sialic acid receptors on host respiratory cells and facilitates membrane fusion; by blocking these interactions, the vaccine prevents viral entry and subsequent replication.
