Overview

Seawater isotonic solution is a sterile, diluted seawater preparation adjusted to a salt concentration of approximately 0.9% (w/v), matching the osmotic pressure of human extracellular fluid and blood plasma. Unlike simple physiological saline (0.9% NaCl), seawater solutions retain a complex profile of trace elements and minerals naturally found in the ocean, such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, and copper. These minerals are thought to provide additional therapeutic benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties and the optimization of ciliary beat frequency. The solution is primarily indicated for nasal hygiene, the relief of nasal congestion associated with rhinitis or sinusitis, and post-operative care. Its mechanism of action is primarily mechanical, involving the irrigation and clearance of mucus, crusts, allergens, and inflammatory mediators from the nasal mucosa, while simultaneously hydrating the epithelium and supporting the natural defense mechanisms of the upper respiratory tract.
