Sebacia Microparticles is an FDA-cleared medical device consisting of gold-silica microparticles designed for the treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris. The product is a liquid suspension of silica cores wrapped in a gold shell and coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG). When applied topically, the microparticles penetrate the pores and sebaceous glands. Upon activation by a 1064 nm laser, the particles facilitate selective photothermal heating, which reduces the size and activity of the sebaceous glands—a primary cause of acne. The treatment typically involves three in-office sessions spaced one to two weeks apart.
