Overview

Sebacic acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic fatty acid with the chemical formula C10H18O4. It is classified as an alpha,omega-dicarboxylic acid and is found in human and plant metabolism[1][2][3]. Sebacic acid has been studied for its potential metabolic effects; oral administration in humans has been shown to reduce postprandial hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetic subjects by lowering hepatic glucose output and increasing peripheral glucose disposal. In vitro studies indicate that it increases insulin-mediated glucose uptake and GLUT4 expression in muscle cells[7]. Its mechanism of action may involve inhibition of hemoglobin subunit alpha[2], though this requires further validation. Sebacic acid also plays a role as a precursor or metabolite involved in inflammatory skin conditions via conversion to pro-inflammatory analogs acting on the OXER1 receptor[3].
