Overview

Secale cereale pollen is an extract derived from the pollen of rye grass. It is utilized in two distinct therapeutic areas: allergy/immunology and urology. In the context of allergy, it is used as an allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) agent to treat seasonal allergic rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis. It works by inducing immune tolerance, characterized by the induction of regulatory T-cells and the production of allergen-specific IgG4 antibodies that block IgE-mediated responses. In urology, a standardized formulation (often known as Cernilton or cernitin) is used as a botanical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and chronic prostatitis. Its urological mechanism of action involves anti-inflammatory effects, relaxation of urethral smooth muscle, and potential modulation of testosterone metabolism within the prostate.
