secnidazole

Secnidazole is a nitroimidazole antimicrobial agent used primarily to treat bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis in patients 12 years of age and older. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against many anaerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as protozoa such as *Trichomonas vaginalis*, *Entamoeba histolytica*, and *Giardia lamblia*. The drug acts by entering the target pathogen where its nitro group is reduced by microbial nitroreductase enzymes to generate reactive intermediates that damage DNA helix structure, disrupt protein synthesis and replication, leading to cell death. Secnidazole is administered orally (typically as granules) in a single dose regimen.
