Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Secnidazole + ciprofloxacin is a combination of two small molecule antibiotics used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria and protozoa. Secnidazole is a 5-nitroimidazole antimicrobial that acts primarily against anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa by generating reactive intermediates that damage DNA and disrupt protein synthesis, leading to cell death[3][2]. Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination[6]. This combination may be considered in the management of mixed infections or syndromic treatment approaches such as pelvic inflammatory disease when both anaerobic coverage (secnidazole) and broad-spectrum Gram-negative/Gram-positive coverage (ciprofloxacin) are needed[5]. Each drug has distinct mechanisms of action but together provide complementary antimicrobial activity.
