Overview

Secoisolariciresinol is an organic compound classified as a lignan, a type of phenylpropanoid. It is naturally found in various plants, most notably flaxseed, where it primarily exists as its diglucoside form, secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG). In the human intestine, gut microflora metabolize SDG into secoisolariciresinol, which is then further converted into the mammalian lignans enterodiol and enterolactone. These mammalian lignans are phytoestrogens, meaning they can weakly mimic or modulate estrogen activity by binding to estrogen receptors, exhibiting both estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects depending on the endogenous hormonal environment. Secoisolariciresinol and its metabolites are also recognized for their antioxidant, antiproliferative, and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been investigated for potential health benefits including protective effects against certain cancers (such as breast and colon cancer), cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes.
