Secoisolariciresinol is an organic compound classified as a lignan, a type of phenylpropanoid. It is naturally found in various plants, most notably flaxseed, where it primarily exists as its diglucoside form, secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG). In the human intestine, gut microflora metabolize SDG into secoisolariciresinol, which is then further converted into the mammalian lignans enterodiol and enterolactone.
