Segesterone (commonly used as its acetate ester, segesterone acetate) is a potent synthetic progestin of the 19-norprogesterone class. It acts as a high-affinity agonist of the progesterone receptor with minimal activity at androgenic, estrogenic, or mineralocorticoid receptors. Segesterone is primarily used in hormonal contraceptives—most notably in combination with ethinyl estradiol as a vaginal ring (e.g., Annovera)—and for the treatment of endometriosis in some countries. Due to rapid hepatic metabolism and lack of oral bioavailability, it is administered via non-oral routes such as implants or vaginal rings.
