Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Seglor is a modified-release hard capsule containing dihydroergotamine mesylate (5 mg) as the active ingredient, developed and marketed by Acarpia Farmaceutici. It is indicated for the treatment of migraine, headaches, and vertigo. Dihydroergotamine is a hydrogenated derivative of ergotamine and belongs to the anti-migraine (antiemicranicis) class of medications. It acts as a non-selective agonist at serotonin receptors, particularly the 5-HT1B, 5-HT1D, and 5-HT1F subtypes. This agonism leads to the vasoconstriction of dilated intracranial blood vessels and inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides from trigeminal nerve endings, thereby alleviating headache symptoms. Dihydroergotamine also exhibits activity at alpha-adrenergic and dopamine receptors. The modified-release formulation of Seglor is designed to provide sustained therapeutic effects and is approved for use in Italy.
