Selaginella doederleinii is a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Selaginellaceae, widely distributed in Southeast Asia and southern China. Known as 石上柏 (Shi Shang Bai) in Chinese medicine, it has been traditionally used for its broad pharmacological activities including anticancer, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antihyperuricemia (gout), antibacterial, antihypertensive effects and potential benefits for Alzheimer's disease. The plant contains diverse bioactive compounds such as biflavonoids (amentoflavone and robustaflavone derivatives), lignans ((-)-lirioresinol A/B), phenolic acids (ferulic acid), anthraquinones (emodin), coumarins and polysaccharides. Its mechanism of action is multifaceted—biflavonoids are believed to contribute to its antitumor activity via cytotoxicity against cancer cells; other constituents provide anti-inflammatory or antioxidant effects. In traditional Chinese medicine it is used to clear heat and resolve fire toxicity; clear damp-heat; invigorate blood circulation; disperse stagnant blood; remove tumors and disperses accumulations[3][4][10]. Modern research supports its use especially for various cancers but also suggests potential applications in neurodegenerative diseases.
