Selamectin is a semi-synthetic avermectin antiparasitic and antihelminthic drug used topically in dogs and cats. It is primarily indicated for the prevention and treatment of heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis), flea infestations (Ctenocephalides spp.), ear mites (Otodectes cynotis), sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei), certain ticks in dogs, as well as hookworms (Ancylostoma tubaeforme) and roundworms (Toxocara cati) in cats. Selamectin acts by binding to glutamate-gated chloride channels present in nerve and muscle cells of parasites. This increases chloride ion permeability across cell membranes leading to hyperpolarization, neuromuscular paralysis, impaired muscular contraction, and ultimately parasite death. Mammals lack these specific channels which confers a high safety margin for treated animals. The drug was developed by Pfizer (now Zoetis) and is not approved for human use[1][2][5][6][7].
