Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences as a nootropic and anxiolytic drug. It is an analogue of the immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin, giving it immunomodulatory properties in addition to its central nervous system effects. Selank modulates neurotransmitter systems including GABAergic, serotonergic, and dopaminergic signaling, and also increases expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Research indicates it produces anxiolytic, antidepressant-like, cognitive-enhancing, and neuroprotective effects, with a favorable side effect profile lacking sedation or dependence[1][3][5][7]. It is approved for clinical use in Russia primarily for the treatment of anxiety and asthenic disorders, and is often used off-label for cognitive enhancement, stress resilience, and mental fatigue[1][5][7].
