Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Select Bag Citrate is a citrate-buffered dialysis solution developed by Baxter Gambro Renal, specifically evaluated in clinical trials by A.O.U. Città della Salute e della Scienza for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Unlike traditional acetate-buffered solutions, which typically contain 3 mmol/L of acetate, Select Bag Citrate utilizes 1 mmol/L of citrate as the buffering agent. The citrate anion is metabolized into bicarbonate, providing the necessary acid-base balance during hemodialysis while potentially reducing systemic inflammation and improving dialysis efficiency. Clinical studies have indicated that switching from acetate to citrate buffers can lead to a reduction in inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and chemerin, while also enhancing the removal of uremic toxins and improving overall dialysis efficacy.
