Selegiline is a selective, irreversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B), used primarily in the management of Parkinson’s disease and major depressive disorder. By inhibiting MAO-B, selegiline reduces the breakdown of dopamine in the brain, thereby increasing its availability and helping to control movement symptoms in Parkinson’s disease. It is also used as adjunct therapy with levodopa/carbidopa to enhance their effects and reduce motor fluctuations. At higher doses or via transdermal administration, it can inhibit both MAO-A and MAO-B, which broadens its use to depression treatment. Selegiline is available as oral tablets/capsules (e.g., Eldepryl), orally disintegrating tablets (e.g., Zelapar), and a transdermal patch (Emsam)[1][2][6][9].
