Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Selegiline transdermal patch is a pharmaceutical formulation of selegiline administered via a skin patch (transdermal therapeutic system, TTS). It is primarily used for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults. Selegiline is an irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) that increases levels of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine in the brain. At lower doses and with oral administration, it selectively inhibits MAO-B; however, when delivered via the transdermal route at antidepressant doses, it achieves higher plasma concentrations and inhibits both MAO-A and MAO-B isoenzymes. This dual inhibition underlies its efficacy in depression by increasing synaptic concentrations of all three key monoamines[2][3][7]. The transdermal delivery bypasses first-pass metabolism and reduces dietary restrictions compared to oral nonselective MAOIs at lower doses[6][7].
