Overview

Selenious acid is an inorganic small molecule used as a trace element supplement to provide a source of selenium in parenteral nutrition (PN). It is indicated for both adult and pediatric patients when oral or enteral nutrition is not possible, insufficient, or contraindicated. Once administered, selenious acid is converted in vivo to hydrogen selenide through glutathione-involved electron reductions. This hydrogen selenide serves as a selenium pool for the synthesis of various selenoproteins, including glutathione peroxidase, iodothyronine deiodinase, and thioredoxin reductase. These enzymes are essential for antioxidant defense, thyroid hormone metabolism, and maintaining cellular redox status. The drug is marketed by American Regent, a subsidiary of Daiichi Sankyo.
