Overview
Selenium ACE cream is a topical antioxidant combination formulation containing selenium (as an amino acid chelate) along with vitamins A, C, and E. It is primarily developed and studied for the treatment of photoaged skin. The mechanism of action involves the synergistic effect of its components: selenium acts as an essential cofactor for the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase; vitamin A (retinol or its derivatives) promotes cell turnover and collagen production via retinoic acid receptors; and vitamins C and E serve as potent antioxidants that neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by ultraviolet radiation. By reducing oxidative stress and supporting dermal structural integrity, the cream aims to improve clinical signs of skin aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and dyspigmentation. A randomized controlled trial conducted by Sohag University evaluated its efficacy and safety in non-elderly volunteers with photoaged skin.
