Overview

Selenium-containing alpha-D-1,6-glucan (Se-CPA) is a selenium-modified polysaccharide derived from the Chinese chestnut (*Castanea mollissima* Blume). It is currently being investigated as a preclinical research compound for its neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. In animal models of Alzheimer's disease (APP/PS1 mice), Se-CPA has demonstrated the ability to improve cognitive function and depressive-like behavior by reducing oxidative stress, lowering serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels, and inhibiting the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in astrocytes and microglia. Additionally, it has shown potential in remodeling the gut microbiome, increasing microbial diversity, and promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Beyond neurodegeneration, the compound has also been studied for its therapeutic effects in models of inflammatory bowel disease, such as DSS-induced colitis, where it acts to remodel dysbacteriosis and reduce systemic inflammation.
