Selenium-enriched Agaricus bisporus is a formulation derived from the white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) cultivated with elevated selenium content, typically achieved through supplementation with sodium selenite during mushroom growth. This produces a mushroom with high levels of organic selenium, primarily selenocysteine or selenomethionine, along with natural bioactive mushroom compounds such as β-glucans. The resulting product combines antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and potential prebiotic effects from mushroom polysaccharides with the essential micronutrient functions of selenium. Mechanistic studies indicate that selenium-enriched Agaricus bisporus upregulates antioxidant selenoenzymes (notably glutathione peroxidase 1 and 2) and supports intestinal barrier integrity, antioxidant status, and immune function. It has been studied as a dietary supplement, particularly for animal nutrition (notably for pigs undergoing weaning), with evidence for improved growth, intestinal health, and mitigation of oxidative stress-induced mucosal permeability.
