Overview

Selenium-enriched milk proteins (dairy-Se) are a specialized dietary source of selenium produced by incorporating the trace element into milk proteins, typically through the supplementation of dairy cows' diets. Research indicates that dairy-Se is biologically distinct from other selenium supplements, such as selenium yeast. In preclinical models, dairy-Se has been shown to specifically up-regulate the mRNA expression of **Selenoprotein P (SeP)** and **Gastrointestinal glutathione peroxidase-2 (GPx-2)** in the colon, whereas selenium yeast primarily affects GPx-1. This targeted up-regulation of colonic selenoproteins is associated with significant chemopreventive effects against colorectal cancer (CRC), likely by enhancing antioxidant defenses and maintaining mucosal integrity. It is primarily investigated as a nutraceutical intervention for cancer prevention.
