Overview

M136101 (also known as AZR-MD-001) is a topical ophthalmic ointment formulation of selenium sulfide being developed by Maruho, under license from Azura Ophthalmics, for the treatment of dry eye disease associated with obstructive Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). Selenium sulfide acts as a keratolytic agent that addresses the underlying pathophysiology of MGD by reducing the hyperkeratinization of the meibomian gland ductal epithelium and orifices. By breaking disulfide bonds in keratin, the drug helps to clear blocked glands, improve the quality and flow of meibum (the lipid component of tears), and restore the stability of the tear film, thereby alleviating dry eye symptoms and improving ocular surface health.
