Overview

AZR-MD-001 is an investigational ophthalmic ointment containing selenium sulfide (also referred to as selenium disulfide), developed for the treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and associated ocular surface diseases. It is applied directly to the lower eyelid and transferred to the upper eyelid through blinking. The drug exhibits a multi-modal mechanism of action by breaking down abnormal keratin protein bonds to soften glandular blockages, slowing keratin production to prevent future blockages, and increasing both the quality and quantity of meibum produced by the meibomian glands. This approach targets both the underlying pathophysiology of MGD and its resulting symptoms such as dry eye disease and contact lens discomfort. Clinical trials have demonstrated significant improvements in gland function, ocular surface symptoms, tear stability, and patient-reported outcomes with a favorable safety profile[1][3][4][6][8].
