Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Selenium sulphide (also known as selenium disulfide) is an inorganic chemical compound used as an antifungal and antiseborrheic agent. It is widely utilized in topical shampoos and lotions to treat dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, tinea versicolor, and tinea capitis. Selenium sulphide exerts its therapeutic effects through a dual mechanism: it acts as a cytostatic agent, reducing the turnover of epidermal cells (antimitotic action), and exhibits direct antifungal activity against yeast species such as *Malassezia*. Additionally, an ophthalmic formulation of selenium sulphide (AZR-MD-001) is being developed by Azura Ophthalmics for the treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), dry eye disease, and contact lens discomfort. In the ocular setting, selenium sulphide acts as an ophthalmic keratolytic, breaking down disulfide bonds in keratin aggregates to clear gland obstructions, while also stimulating lipogenesis and reducing bacterial/mite colonization.
