Overview

Selenium yeast is a dietary supplement and feed additive produced by fermenting Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast) in a selenium-rich medium. The resulting product contains organic forms of selenium—primarily selenomethionine—incorporated into the proteins of the yeast. Selenium is an essential trace mineral required for the synthesis of selenoproteins involved in antioxidant defense and thyroid hormone metabolism. Selenium-enriched yeasts are used to prevent or treat selenium deficiency in humans and animals. They are also marketed for potential benefits related to immune function, thyroid health (especially autoimmune thyroiditis), chemoprevention (notably cancer risk reduction), male fertility, and as antioxidants[2][3][4][6]. However, evidence supporting many non-deficiency indications is mixed or inconclusive[1][3][5]. Selenium from this source may be better absorbed than inorganic forms due to its organic incorporation as selenomethionine[2].
