Overview

Selexipag is a selective, nonprostanoid prostacyclin (IP) receptor agonist used for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH, WHO Group 1). It works by selectively activating the prostacyclin receptor (also known as IP or PGI2 receptor), leading to vasodilation in the pulmonary circulation and inhibition of smooth muscle cell proliferation. This mechanism helps reduce elevated blood pressure in the lungs, slow disease progression, and decrease hospitalization risk for PAH. Selexipag is chemically distinct from prostacyclin analogues and is metabolized to an active metabolite (ACT-333679/MRE‑269), which has higher potency at the IP receptor. The drug was developed by Actelion Pharmaceuticals and is marketed under the brand name Uptravi[1][2][5][9].
