Selg Esse

Selg Esse is a high-volume osmotic laxative formulation used for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy or other endoscopic and radiological procedures. It is a combination product containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) 4000, electrolytes, and simethicone. PEG 4000 acts as an osmotic agent that is not absorbed by the gut; it retains water within the intestinal lumen, increasing stool volume and stimulating peristalsis to clear the colon. The inclusion of electrolytes (sodium sulfate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride) helps maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, which is particularly relevant in patients with renal impairment. Simethicone is added as an anti-foaming agent to reduce gas bubbles and foam in the bowel, thereby enhancing visibility during endoscopic examination. Selg Esse is typically administered as a 4-liter solution, often in a split-dose regimen.
