Overview
The BUCCAL-PEP semaglutide buccal patch is a novel drug delivery system being developed by the BUCCAL-PEP Consortium for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. It utilizes a multifunctional, triple-layered biomaterial patch designed for buccal (in-cheek) administration of semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. The patch incorporates permeation enhancers, such as sodium deoxycholate (SDC), and peptidase inhibitors to facilitate the transport of the peptide across the buccal mucosa into systemic circulation while protecting it from enzymatic degradation in saliva. This technology aims to provide a non-invasive alternative to subcutaneous injections and a more efficient delivery method compared to existing oral formulations. The project is currently in the preclinical stage, with validation studies being conducted in porcine models to assess blood levels and tissue safety.
