Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Semen Plantaginis, known in Chinese as Cheqianzi, is the dried ripe seed of *Plantago asiatica* L. or *Plantago depressa* Willd. It is a staple of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) primarily utilized for its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Pharmacologically, it contains bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides, flavonoids (quercetin, luteolin), and phenylethanoid glycosides (verbascoside). It is frequently indicated for the treatment of edema, urinary dysfunction, and inflammatory conditions. Recent research suggests it may modulate the ACE2/Ang(1-7)/Mas receptor axis to improve erectile function in hypertensive models and act as an aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) antagonist through specific constituents like erythro-guaiacylglycerol-β-ferulic acid ether (GFA). It is a key component of classical formulas like Wuzi-Yanzong-Wan.
