Overview

Semen Platycladi, also known as Bai Zi Ren or Biota Seed, is the seed of *Platycladus orientalis* (L.) Franco. It is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine with a sweet flavor and neutral nature. Its main functions are to calm the spirit (Shen), nourish the Heart, and moisten the intestines to help open the bowels. It is used for irritability, insomnia, forgetfulness, palpitations with anxiety, night terrors in children, constipation due to Blood or Yin deficiency (especially postpartum), and night sweats due to Yin deficiency[1][4][6]. Pharmacological effects include anti-arteriosclerosis, sleep improvement, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity[2][5]. The main active components are fatty acids such as linoleic acid and linolenic acid[2][3]. Studies suggest its anxiolytic effects may be mediated through regulation of lipid metabolism pathways and neuroactive ligand-receptor interactions[3].
