Overview

Semen Sinapis, derived from the seeds of *Sinapis alba* L. or *Brassica juncea* (L.) Czern. et Coss., is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) primarily used for respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and cough. It is a key component of the "Bai Jie Zi San" formula used in acupoint sticking therapy (tianjiu), particularly during the "dog days" of summer (Sanfu) to treat "winter diseases." Pharmacologically, it contains active compounds like sinapine and allyl isothiocyanate (AITC). These components exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-senescence properties. Recent research suggests its potential in treating hypertension by targeting CD38 via miRNA delivery and managing COPD through the modulation of AhR/CYP1A1 and Nrf2/NQO1 pathways. It is also investigated for its effects on subthreshold depression and irritable bowel syndrome.
