Overview

Seniprutug (BCD-180) is a first-in-class monoclonal antibody developed by the Russian biotechnology company BIOCAD in collaboration with the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University and the Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry. It is specifically designed to treat ankylosing spondylitis (also known as radiographic axial spondyloarthritis or Bechterew's disease) by targeting and depleting TRBV9-positive T cells. These specific T cells are implicated as the pathological drivers of the autoimmune response in the disease. By selectively eliminating these cells, seniprutug aims to address the root cause of inflammation without broadly suppressing the immune system. The drug received approval from the Russian Ministry of Health in April 2024, following Phase 2 clinical trials (ELEFTA study) that demonstrated significant efficacy (ASAS40 response) and a favorable safety profile.
