Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Agio-Prep is a bowel preparation regimen developed by Madaus GmbH for colon cleansing prior to colonoscopy. It is a combination product based on Agiolax-Micro, containing sennosides (derived from senna) and psyllium husk (ispaghula). Sennosides function as a stimulant laxative by acting on the colonic mucosa and myenteric plexus to increase peristalsis, while psyllium husk acts as a bulk-forming agent that absorbs water in the intestines to increase stool volume and soften consistency. The product was evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial in Germany comparing 3g and 6g dosing regimens against Moviprep, assessing bowel cleansing quality via the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale.
